Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily anti-retroviral medication taken by HIV-negative persons to protect against HIV.

Can PrEP really protect me from HIV?

According to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), PrEP offers up to 99% protection from HIV when used correctly and consistently as prescribed.

Is PrEP safe?

PrEP is safe but there might be a few side effects. Some people may experience side effects such as nausea, fatigue, diarrhoea and headache. These side effects are usually not permanent and go away over time.

“PrEP is approved by World Health Organisation and the Federal Government of Nigeria”

Who can be prescribed prEP?

PrEP is prescribed only to HIV-negative adults and adolescents who are at high risk for contracting HIV.

Who is most at risk of contracting HIV?

  • Sexually active persons
    • Someone who has had vaginal or anal sex in the past 6 months
    • Someone who has had unprotected sex in the past 6 months
    • Someone who has sex with multiple partners
    • Someone who has been diagnosed with an STD in the past 6 months.
    • Someone who has a sexual partner with HIV (especially if the partner has an unknown or detectable viral load)
    • Men who have sex with men
  • IV drug users
    • Someone who shares syringes, needles and other sharp equipment to inject drugs
    • Someone who has an injection partner who is HIV-positiv
  • Can people of all ages take PrEP?

PrEP is approved for HIV negative adolescents and adults

Do I need a prescription for PrEP?

Yes! Self-medication is wrong.

Visit a healthcare centre if you’re at risk of contracting HIV to find out if PrEP is right for you.

Do I still need to wear a condom while on PrEP?

You still need to wear a condom while on PrEP to protect you from other Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Sexually Transmitted Infections are spread through semen, vaginal fluids, or through blood. Protect yourself better with condoms every time you have sex
