NANI (NiBUCAA Ambassador NYSC Initiative) Project addressing some Components of Reproductive Health in a pragmatic way (Part 1)
- WHAT IS REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH?
- “State of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters related to the reproductive systems and to its functions and processes”.
- (International Conference on Population and Development – Cairo, Egypt (Sept. 1994).
- Note: the definition also applies to Adolescents.
The Components of Reproductive Health:
- The 9 components are:
- Safe motherhood (pre-natal care to breastfeeding)
- Family planning information and services;
- Prevention and management of infertility & sexual dysfunction in both men and women;
- Prevention and management of complications of abortions;
- Provision of safe abortion services, where the law permits;
- Prevention and management of reproductive tract infections, especially STIs/HIV
- Promotion of healthy sexual maturation from pre-adolescence, responsible and safer sex throughout the lifetime and gender equality;
- Elimination of harmful practices, such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), child marriage, domestic and sexual violence against women;
- Management of non-infectious conditions of the reproductive system, such as genital fistula, cervical cancer, complications of FGM and reproductive health problems associated with menopause.
ADOLESCENT REPRODUCTIVE AND SEXUAL HEALTH PROBLEMS
- Unplanned pregnancy
- Unsafe Abortion
- Multiple sexual partnership (serial & concurrent)
- Sexually Transmitted Infections
- HIV & AIDS
- Sexual violence – (rape, non-consensual sex, sexual harassment )
- Early sexual debut
- Drug/substance abuse
- Prostitution/sex work (male & female)
- Transactional sex
- Forced marriage
- Early marriage
- Coping with puberty
- Low status of girls
- Concerns over menstruation, wet dreams, masturbation etc
